Any act or behavior, which causes economic harm to an individual. Economic violence can take the form of, for example, property damage, restricting access to financial resources, education or the labour market, or not complying with economic responsibilities, such as alimony. Denial of rightful access to economic resources / assets or livelihood opportunities, education, health or other social services, access to inheritance, etc.
Economic violence manifests itself in behaviors and actions that prevent a person from accessing economic freedom. Again, this form of violence can be used implicitly or explicitly. Here are some examples :
- Forbid or strongly advise your spouse not to work outside the home.
- Control your partner's budget and/or seize all or part of your spouse's income or important documents (passport, identity card, etc.).
- Not sharing the family budget fairly and/or refusing to spend money on special occasions.
- Control expenses for essential needs: clothing, food, expenses necessary for the well-being of children, etc.
